Issues with laptop mic

Using a headset with boom mic is ideal especially for videoconferencing but may not be available. A good alternative are the earbuds that some may not realize they have or did not know would work. Try the set of earphones that came with your (smart) phone as almost all of them have a mic built-in that will work by just plugging into the computer.
